Bob was born in Boston, MA on May 4, 1929, the son of the late Edward and Williamina (Ferris) Hughes of Dedham, MA, where he spent his early years.

Bob graduated from Boston Trade High School. In 1946 he joined the US Coast Guard and served as Seaman on the USCG Cutter McCullough, until his honorable discharge in 1949.

After graduating from Nichols College with a degree in business administration in 1952 he attended Northeastern University.

In 1954, Bob started his career as a student sales man with National Biscuit Company in Cambridge, then as a salesman in the Plymouth, MA area and went on to work in the Needham territory where he met his future wife, Dianne (Carlson) Hughes. They were married in November of 1960.

For several years, the couple resided in Medfield and Needham, MA where their two children, John and Anne were born. In 1965, Bob’s promotion to Sales Supervisor brought him and his family to the Portland, ME Nabisco Branch where they lived in Cape Elizabeth, and in 1976 to Brewer as Sales Manager. After 34 years with Nabisco, Bob retired in 1988 and settled in Kennebunk. During his retirement, he formed a land development company, D&R Leasing Co., operating in the Arundel area.

In 1965, during his first winter in Maine, Bob learned to ski and it became the favorite pastime of the whole family. After commuting to Sunday River for several years, Bob built a ski house in 1972 in Viking Village. Both Bob and Dianne also skied in Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

The skis were hung up in 1990 and Bob and Dianne spent their winters in Ft. Lauderdale where he was active as a Board Member of their condo.
