Obituary for Frederick James "Fred" White

Frederick James “Fred” White, 74, of Kennebunkport, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, Tuesday afternoon, August 6, 2019 at Southern Maine Healthcare in Biddeford following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Weston, MA on May 14, 1945, a son of Richard and Lillian (Hansbury) White. Growing up in Weston, he graduated from Weston High School, where he was a football legend. Some of his records set on the gridiron were just recently broken! He was a standout both on the field and in his daily life.

After High School Fred joined the family business, Richard White and Sons Construction, which specialized in large, commercial complexes; including the football stadium at Boston College. Retiring from the family business in the late 1990’s, Fred began a local company in Kennebunkport, White’s Woodworking. As a Master Craftsman, he had a hand in the construction of several notable local structures, homes and more importantly his love for restoration of glass windowed doors and historic buildings.

Fred was a sports enthusiast and avid sailor his entire life. It was not uncommon to see him walking the beach at Goose Rocks with a cooler in one hand, oars in the other and friends by his side. His partner Sally quickly became his first mate and they enjoyed their summers on the Irish Mist.

Fred always looked forward to the start of the football season where he and his son, Craig, would congregate in front of the TV to cheer on their New England Patriots. We are hoping for a 7th ring.

Family and friends will remember Fred fondly on any dance floor where he and his daughter, Karen, would dance the night away and where we know he is dancing and listening to his favorite radio station.

For over 35 years, Fred was a tireless advocate and member of the Goose Rocks Beach Association. He spearheaded the flagpole campaign, and the Association’s collections of cans to be recycled through Klink, with funds donated to the York County Shelter.

In addition to his parents, Fred is predeceased by a brother, Richard White.

Fred is survived by his son, Craig Douglas White and wife Maggie of Rockport, ME; his daughter, Karen Elizabeth White and fiancé Brendan Hegarty of Charleston, SC; three sisters, Nancy Healey and husband William of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Dorothy Healey and husband Kenneth of Westwood, MA, Virginia Seeley of Stone Mountain, GA; his brother, Robert White of Brighton, MA; his life partner, Sally Emily Jordan of Kennebunkport; special friends Joe and Connie Toppa of Centerville, MA; several nieces, nephews, and special buddy Riley Penny.

A private ceremony will take place in September and a celebration of life will immediately follow. Date and time to be determined.

Should friends choose, memorial donations in Fred’s name are encouraged to: Goose Rocks Beach Association, PO Box 140, Kennebunkport, ME 04046 (memo: to keep the flags flying); or, to the York County Homeless Shelter where Fred made sure Thanksgiving was celebrated each and every year (memo: Thanksgiving).
