Obituary for Elaine Mary Scanlon (Murphy)

Elaine Mary Scanlon, 68, of Lebanon, died peacefully on Friday afternoon, June 14, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Boston, MA on December 8, 1950, the only child of Alice Murphy and Costa Lazar. Elaine grew up in South Boston, where she graduated from the former St. Augustine High School. Following High School, she enlisted and proudly served her country in the United States Air Force.

In April 1970, she married her life partner and soul mate, William Scanlon, recently celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary.

Upon discharge from active duty, Elaine utilized her G.I. Bill benefits and returned to school, earning her Bachelor’s Degree from Boston College, followed by her Masters in Accounting from Nathaniel Hawthorne College.

Elaine was a homemaker, raising her three daughters and keeping Bill in line! She also worked in Customer Service for the Telephone Company for many years. As a proud veteran, she was active in the Berwick American Legion, and was past District Commander of the Legion. Elaine was also active with the Biddeford Vietnam Veteran’s Association. Though she was not a member of the Rolling Thunder, she was a proud supporter. In her free time, she was an avid reader, photographer, gardener and cook. She was a devoted fan of “Jeopardy,” even in the early days when Art Fleming was the host. Traveling, walking the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, and spending quality time with her family kept her busy.

Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, William Scanlon of Lebanon; three daughters, Marybeth Bodge of Rochester, NH, Amy Scanlon of San Francisco, CA and Kerry Giglio of Farmington, NH; six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

There are no visiting hours. A Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 83 Stanley Road, Springvale. Should friends choose, memorial donations in her name are encouraged to: Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1044, PO Box 844, Sanford, ME 04073.
