Obituary for Joseph Lee Arnette

After a prolonged battle with pulmonary disease, Joseph Lee Arnette died peacefully on March 16, 2019 at Southern Maine Medical Center, with his wife Kathy and his daughter Lisa at his side.

Joe was born June 7, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Hugh L. and Barbara M. Arnette. When Joe was two years old, the family moved to Syracuse, New York. Shortly after graduating high school, Joe joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C., where he served as a paratrooper and medic in the 82nd Airborne Division. After his release from the Army, Joe attended and graduated from North Carolina State University with Bachelor’s Degrees in wildlife biology and psychology. He received a Master’s Degree in wildlife biology from the University of Missouri. Joe then pursued his doctorate at Utah State University, where he completed all but a dissertation. After serving in various positions in the field of wildlife biology, Joe moved back to Logan, Utah, where he established a biological consulting firm, together with three friends from graduate school. In 1977, while living in Ft. Collins, Colorado, he met his future wife, Kathy, when they were seated next to one another on a plane. They were married on September 2, 1977, and spent 41 wonderful years together. In 1980, having decided to start a writing career and move to Maine, Joe and his wife left Utah and moved to Kennebunkport, Maine. For nearly four decades, Joe was a well-known and respected outdoor writer, writing numerous columns and books. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and leaves behind his beloved daughter Lisa and his wife Kathy. He will be terribly missed.
