Obituary for Martha Hurd Boothby (Downing)

Martha Hurd (Downing) Boothby, 78 years, a resident of West Kennebunk, fell asleep into the arms of her Savior Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at her residence following a period of failing health, with her loving family at her side.

Martha was born September 12, 1940 in Biddeford, the daughter of Samuel Owen and Eleanor F. (Cheever) Downing, and is a graduate of Kennebunk High School, Class of 1958.

Soon after, she married the love of her life, Robert Field Boothby on December 26, 1958, and together began their life story. Residing in Kennebunk, briefly in Connecticut, and in West Kennebunk.

She furthered her education by earning her nursing degree at SMVTI. Martha then began her longtime career as nurse working with several local nursing homes and care facilities, including the York Manor, where she worked for over 15 years.

A loving and very faithful person, she exemplified her Christian faith daily, always extending a helping hand to those who needed help, giving a supportive hug, or kind word of support. Martha was a longtime member of the Sea Road Advent Christian Church, where she found many ways to walk with others in Christ’s footsteps.

She loved to watch football, and most family members would give her own space on the couch on gameday, as she really got into the games. Spending time with her family and sharing a laugh with her friends just made her day.

Martha is predeceased by her son, Robert M. Boothby, who died in 2009 and left behind his wife Terry, five step daughters, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Survivors include her beloved husband and lifelong friend of 60 years, Robert “Bob” Field Boothby; her three sons, Daniel Boothby and his wife Lori, Timothy Boothby, of Kennebunk, and Jeffrey Boothby and his partner William Rebich of Windsor, CA; a brother John D. Downing and his wife Nancy of Kennebunk; two sisters, Mary Benbow of La Jola, CA and Barbara Freeman of Ocean Park; grandchildren, Dan Boothby Jr. and his wife Allison, Thomas Boothby, Lydia Boothby and her companion Ryan Studley, Rachel Boothby, Jacob Boothby, Timothy Adrian Boothby, Helena Boothby, William Fulton and Elizabeth Belin; and two great grandchildren Eva Boothby and Charlotte Studley.
