Obituary for Mildred Elizabeth "Millie" Stevens (Johnson)

Mildred E. Stevens, Millie to those who knew and loved her, 97, of Kennebunk and a former longtime resident of Middleton, MA, died Friday morning in Kennebunk following a long illness.

Millie was born June 19, 1921 in Worcester, MA, the daughter of Arthur W. and Hazel A. Eaton Johnson, and attended local schools there. She then went onto hairdressing school, and for a brief time worked as a beautician in Worcester.

Meeting the love of her life, Phil Clayton Stevens, they were married September 20, 1941, and at that time Millie began making a home for her young family. Once the children were a little older, she took a job with the State of Massachusetts at the Danvers State Hospital, where she was an attendant from 1960 to 1985, when she retired.

Millie was a longtime member of the Middleton Congregational Church, where she was active in the Kings Daughters and Women’s fellowship. She was also well known for her knitting and crocheting handiwork.

She is predeceased by her husband Phil Clayton Stevens, son-in-law Frank Harding, and brother Wallace E. Johnson.

Survivors include her two sons Barry Stevens and his wife Kay of Salem, OR, Mark and his wife Patricia of Kennebunk, ME and a daughter Valarie Harding of Salem, OR, three grandchildren Stephanie Weston, Michelle Miles and Robert (BJ) Stevens, 2 step grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Farrell, and six great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, a very special cousin, Rita Eaton Johnson of Millbury, MA and several nieces and nephews.

A springtime graveside service will be held in Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton, MA and announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel and Peterson- O’Donnell Funeral Home in Salem, MA.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Rt. 1 # 1, Scarborough, ME. 04074 in Millie’s memory.
