Obituary for Barbara Joan Cushing

Barbara Joan Cushing
OGUNQUIT and PORTLAND, ME.
Barbara Cushing, long time resident of Ogunquit and Long Island, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a period of failing health.

Barbara was born December 17, 1929 in Portland, the daughter of Charles Sumner and Hazel Howard Cunningham Cushing. Growing up with her brother Charles Jr. and sister Beverly on Stevens Avenue, she attended Portland schools and earned an associate degree in business from Westbrook Junior College. Summers were spent at the family cottage on Long Island, where Barbara, Beverly and their many cousins would enjoy the simplicity of island living, with the island’s beautiful beaches and timeless rhythms.

She moved to Boston, where she began a successful career in banking. Barbara worked for over twenty years with Shawmut and First National Bank of Boston, where she was a vice president of Human Resources at the time of her retirement.

Returning to her beloved Maine, she purchased a house along the Ogunquit River just at the beginning of Marginal Way which she would call her home for nearly forty years. There, with her longtime partner Sylvia Maclaren, Barbara crafted a life with a wide net of friends and a quiet pace of life which supported the pursuit of many interests, including gardening and calligraphy. She studied calligraphy and became an accomplished professional, selling her work in town during the busy summer months. Barbara also developed a passion for golf, becoming an avid player later in life, enjoying regular outings with friends at Merriland Farms Golf Course in Wells. For several weeks each summer, Barbara would return to Long Island to see family and enjoy the quaint cottage of her youth.

Survivors include four nephews, a niece, numerous grandnieces and nephews and many first and second cousins who remain bonded to Barbara through the numerous Cushing families still calling Long Island home.

Funeral services will be private.
