Obituary for Robert Murtagh "Bob" Kane

KENNEBUNKPORT ME. Robert Murtagh Kane, Bob to those who knew and loved him, 75, a resident of Kennebunkport, formerly of Lowell MA and Vermont, died peacefully Thursday morning in Falmouth following a long illness.

Bob was born August 22, 1942 in Lowell MA, the son of James and Alice Murtagh Kane, and is a graduate of Lowell High School, class of 1960. He ran track and played on the golf team, served as class president his senior year, and played clarinet in a band they called “The Fabulous 15 Collegians” and in a Polka Band with his older brother Bill. Attending Babson College, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business.

With the untimely passing of his father, he took the reins of the James F. Kane Insurance Co in Lowell, which he operated for several years. With an entrepreneur’s heart, Bob also worked in real estate with the Century 21 agency for many years, worked side by side with his wife Cheryl running the Ladd Brook Motor Inn in Vermont for almost 15 years, and then together, they owned and operated a residential cleaning company covering Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine for several years.

Bob and Cheryl moved to Maine in 2000 and became members of the First Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.

He enjoyed owning and driving old sports cars (including a Jaguar XKE & Mercedes), tending to and grooming lawns & landscaping, gardening, beekeeping, making furniture kits, biking, playing instruments, especially the clarinet, and playing with his grandchildren.

Bob is predeceased by his parents James & Alice Kane, his brother Bill and his
sister, Judith Berube.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 30yrs. Cheryl Kane of Kennebunkport, two sons, Brian Turner & his wife Jen of Baltimore, MD, and Aaron Kane of Kennebunkport, two step sons, Jason Ford and his wife Chelsea of Cardiff, CA, Ken Ford and his wife Heather of Lexington, MA, a step daughter Rebecca Connole and her husband Chris of Auburn, MA, a brother James Kane and his wife Marcy of New River, AZ, 7 grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held 11 AM Thursday, July 19, 2018 at First Congregational Church, North St. Kennebunkport, with Reverend James Henry officiating.
