Obituary for George J. Harrington Jr.

George J. Harrington Jr.
Stockton Springs and Kennebunk
George J. Harrington, Jr., 89 years of Stockton Springs and Kennebunk, died February 6, 2018 passed way at the Maine Medical Center with his loving family present. George was born February 22, 1928 in Boston, MA the son of George and Constance (Ward) Harrington Sr. He graduated from Pomfret High School in Pomfret, CT and earned his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and never lost his patriotic values. He was married to the former Nancy Whittle of Augusta, Maine for 64 devoted years. She predeceased him in 2013.
George worked for Keuffel & Esser Company, York plant in Kennebunk, retiring after 28 years as Assistant Plant Manager. He was on the Board of Directors at both the Howard Realty Co. in Providence, RI and the Kennebunk Chamber of Commerce. He was Chairman of the Budget Board in Kennebunk. In addition, he was held on committee for both the Private Industrial Council for the York County Employment and Training agency and the Kennebunk Industrial Committee. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 0157 in Stockton Springs and the Gulf Shores Tennis Club in Gulf Shores, AL.
George enjoyed conversation, connecting with friends that he gathered throughout his lifetime, reading, tennis, nature, canoeing, and playing the harmonica. He was a master of spontaneous puns and had an active spiritual life. He loved all his dogs regardless of their limitations; his kindness and concern for both animals and his fellow man were legendary. He showed compassion and respect for all with whom he had contact and was greatly loved by many. He was a very good man.
George is survived by his loving wife, Ann C. Berry, his daughters, Deborah Patton and her husband, Sam, of Ozark, Alabama {he would say Roll Tide here}, Holly Young and her husband, Carl, of Wiscasset, Maine. He will be dearly missed always by his three grandchildren, Carson Cistulli and his wife Kali Coles, Samantha Sharff and her husband Aaron and Victoria Patton along with his two great grandchildren Evelyn and Jackie. George was blessed to have two stepdaughters: Holly Moiles and Heidi Berry Gottlieb. He is also survived by the wonderful Ellis clan, Coffee Club, led by special friend “just” Barb, and caring friend Linda.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 19th at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Wreaths Across America. As he always said, God Bless America!
