Obituary for Gertrude Elizabeth Jackman

Gertrude Elizabeth Jackman
KENNEBUNK, Maine. Gertrude Elizabeth Jackman, 90, of Kennebunk, Maine, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Huntington Commons, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Originally from Winthrop, Massachusetts, Gertrude was born on March 26, 1927, the youngest daughter of William and Lillian (Hunter) Jackman. She attended Winthrop Schools, then graduated from Katherine Gibbs College in Boston, and began a long and successful professional career, most notably as executive secretary for the CEO of Howland Capital in Boston.

In 1987, she and her sister, Rita, retired to Kennebunk to join family and live full-time in their favorite vacation spot. They built one of the first homes in River Locks and became active members of the community, involved with the Senior Center, Newcomers’ Club, Garden Club, and worshipping regularly at the Franciscan Monastery.

Gertrude was a woman of intelligence and integrity. She loved to travel, swim in the ocean, ski, read, and engage in lively discussions on current events. Above all she loved her family. Spending time with them brought her the greatest pleasure of all.

In addition to her parents, Gertrude was predeceased by her sisters Rita Jackman and Lillian Reid, brother-in-law, Robert Reid, and niece, Debra Reid, all of Kennebunk. She is survived by niece, Sandra (Reid) Wise of Warner Robins, Georgia, nephew Jeffery Robert Reid of Kennebunkport, great-nephews Robert Wise (Vickie) of Logansport, Indiana, John Wise (Elizabeth) of Portland, ME, Matthew T. Reid (Dana) of Arundel, Lance W. Reid of Salt Lake City, Utah, great-niece, Laura M. Reid of Hoboken, NJ, great-great-nieces Kristin and Alexis Wise and Ashley (Lower) Binney, and great-great-nephews, Ryan Lower, and Brooks and Boden Reid. Additional survivor includes Valerie (Kuhn) Reid, mother of Matt, Lance and Laura, and a dear friend.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 10 at 11:00 am at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

The family extends our most heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Huntington Commons.
