June is one of those high-spirited and constructive people you wish would never pass on. Her pashion for birds was almost contageous, and she worked enthusiastically to share it with other people. Her paths have threaded into many lives, young ones and old ones, bringing new pashions to them before moving on to the next.
My story goes to the shores of Delaware Bay in the 1980's where June was volunteering to help a team catch Red Knots, a kind of sandpiper. We made a huge catch -- too many. This was immediately apparent -- it would take us 8 or ten hours to collect data, band, and release all of them. I ordered that the net be raised to release most of the captured birds. But June did not agree, let it be known (smile), and "took over", commanding most of our group to collect our scientific data and the remainder to "ring and fling" [quickly slap on a band and release] the remainder. Feathers started flying, and in 2 hours all the birds had their freedom. Some of them appeared in other banders nets for more than 20 years!
Take-homes about June ...don't release a bird without a band ... cheerfully take-over when appropriate ... laugh and smile throughout life ...don't be shy .... share .... enjoy ...love
