Obituary for June M. Ficker (Morton)

June M. Ficker (Morton)
KENNEBUNK ME. June Morton Bryant Ficker, widow of Dr. Robert F. Ficker and resident of Kennebunk Beach passed away peacefully February 5, 2016 after a short illness.
Born June 9, 1924 in Winchester MA. June was the daughter of Newell Kingman Morton and Pearl Bates Morton.
She graduated from Beaver Country Day School in 1942 and Pierce Secretarial School in 1944. She was a member of the South Congregational Church, Kennebunkport, ME and for many years the First Church, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Her many accomplishments included Jr. District Director for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and Past President of the Jr. Woman’s Club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Beginning In 1954, she ran The Atlantis Hotel in Kennebunk for twelve years. She met and married Robert F. Ficker, MD in 1967 and for many years was a member of Southern Maine Health Care Auxiliary, and served as Talent Co-Chair and performed in its Cardiac Capers.
Her love of birds was a lifelong love affair. June received her Federal Bander Certification at Cornell University. She spent eight years as trustee of Maine Audubon Society and in a similar capacity at The Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences in Plymouth, MA. Her endless energy and love of birding led her to a charter membership as well as President of York County Audubon.
She was an inspiration not only to her family but to so many who worked with her. Known by many as The Bird Lady, June’s fondest memories were of those spent teaching at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm. She presented hundreds of Bird Banding demonstrations to children at the Reserve and in the area schools for more than twenty-seven years. In 2015, the Reserve dedicated The Saw-whet Owl Trail to June in honor of her years spent banding the owls’ migration. Another highlight of summer for June was her time spent leading birding expeditions on Star Island, NH.
When she wasn’t banding birds or giving lectures her favorite pastime was playing golf at Webhannet Golf Course where she was given an Honorary Membership in 2015.
She is survived by her loving sons, Peter H. Hill and wife Janet, R. Kim Ficker and wife Karla, Donald B. Ficker and wife Cheryl, Newell Ficker and wife Carol and Linda Hill, widow of the late William M. Hill, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and a special friend Teddy Wolkowski, who she referred to as her adopted son.
