Obituary for Walter C. Ivancevic

Walter C. Ivancevic died on April 7, 2013 in Naples, Florida. He was the son of Pasko and Mary Ivancevic, born on November 4, 1920 in Midland, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from Notre Dame University with a BS in Commerce/Accounting in 1942 and then earned his LLD there in 1944. In 1945 he was admitted to the New York Bar. The same year he joined The Equity Corporation, an investment holding company in New York City. He became its President in 1963. Following that, in 1970 Walter moved to Portland, Maine to become President of both Newport Gas Light Company in Rhode Island and Northern Utilities, Inc of Maine and New Hampshire. His leadership transformed Northern Utilities from a company in dire financial straits and with a failing infrastructure into a sought after utility that merged with Bay State Gas Company of Massachusetts in 1979. Modestly, Walter always credited this dramatic accomplishment to the young professionals he assembled into a dynamic team. His greatest joy was in mentoring the people he hired and in seeing them move on to more responsible positions throughout their careers.
Throughout the years Walter served on the Boards of various corporations and foundations.
In 1989 Walter retired, dividing his time between his homes in Kennebunkport, Maine and Naples, Florida.
Erna, Walter’s wife of 36 years, passed away in 1986. He later married Kirsten Marie Gammeltoft Bergen. He is survived by his daughter Mary E. Nichols and her husband James of Norwalk, Connecticut and his granddaughter Kimberly M. Nichols of Boston, Massachusetts, by his beloved wife Kirsten, and her four sons, Jens-Peter Bergen Esq. of Kennebunk, Maine, Dr. Joseph M. Bergen of Harvard, Massachusetts, Sean P Bergen of Yarmouth, Maine, and William C. Bergen of Bolton, Massachusetts and their Families.
