Obituary for Richard "Dickie" McStay

Richard "Dickie"  McStay
Richard Patrick (Dickie) aka PaPa McStay, 80, died peacefully on December 8th following a period of failing health, surrounded by his family and friends in Maine.

Dickie was born March 12, 1937 in Brighton, MA, the son of Patrick Conleith of County Kildare, Ireland and Alice I. (Ryan) McStay of West Newton, MA, resided in Watertown and attended Watertown and Belmont schools. During his youth, he played semi pro basketball and loved sports, but his real love was fishing and swimming in the Charles River by the upper falls with his friends. He then joined the Navy and served as Seaman on the USS New Jersey.

He practiced his trade as horticulturist and worked with his brothers in the tree business in the Massachusetts area, and retired as a groundsman from McLean’s Hospital, Belmont MA in 1998.

He and his wife Elizabeth moved to York, ME. While living in Maine, he continued his passion for fishing, camping and traveling with his wife. His relationships with people in the area grew and he held several jobs and volunteered to keep busy. His favorite was at Saint Catherine`s of Sienna, Portsmouth, NH as groundskeeper and was a great friend of Monsignor Burns. He had a heart of gold.

Dickie is predeceased by his parents, and his brother Kenneth (Micky) McStay and sister-in-law Lola McStay.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 25 years Elizabeth (Liz/Betty) Wickwire McStay of York ME, formerly of Medford/Malden, MA and her children Cheryl M. O'Halloran and her daughter April M. Womble, of Plymouth, MA. Michael J. O'Halloran from Medford/Malden, MA, now residing in Barrington, NH and Robin L. (O'Halloran) Buckley and her husband William J. Buckley, Jr., of Rochester, NH and their son Michael C. Buckley, who was so special to PaPa; a brother John McStay and wife Carol of Marlborough, MA two sisters Patricia Whooley with his favorite niece Alice Whooley of Salem, MA, formerly of Watertown MA, and Maureen York and husband John York of Kittery, ME, formerly of Watertown, MA, and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Dickie, which will be held Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2pm at Navy Yard Bar & Billiards, 182 State Road, Kittery, Maine.
