Obituary for Charles John "Charlie" Gesell

Charles John "Charlie" Gesell
Charles “Charlie” John Gesell, 78, of Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport, Maine, passed away peacefully Friday, December 8th, 2017, with his loving brother by his side.
Charlie was born in Patterson, NJ on December 24, 1938 to Gladys Anne Newbold Gesell and Charles Gesell, whom he loved dearly. He spent his formative years in Ridgewood, New Jersey, graduating high school in 1956.
After high school, Charlie enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the USS Toro (SS-422 Diesel Power) and the USS Skate (SSN -578 Nuclear Power) submarines during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis and other Cold War confrontations. Charlie left the Submarine Service as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, and as one of the first enlisted Nuclear Power technicians in the free world.
Charlie, now on dry land, began his career with IBM in 1963. He retired in 1991 as Superintendent of Manufacturing, IBM East Fishkill. During his career at IBM Charlie influenced thousands of workers and was a shining example of a true business leader.
During the late 1960’s until the early 1980’s, Charlie also served as an Auxiliary Deputy for the Dutchess County (NY) Sheriff’s Department, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Charlie was a dedicated police officer and public servant.
Upon his retirement after 30 years from IBM, Charlie moved to Cape Porpoise, Maine, where he and his wife Barb became the proprietors of Wee Gifties, until Barb’s passing in 2005. Charlie had a special love of Maine and the people of the Kennebunkport area.
Charles Gesell had so many additional accomplishments in life, it is impossible to list them all here. Charlie was an avid gun and bow hunter, outdoorsman and fly fisherman. His hunting and fishing skills were legendary and his love of the environment was always a priority in his life. He was a proud member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, Life member of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, the Kennebunk Fish & Game Club, and a Life/Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association.
Charles Gesell was a true American patriot who took pride in Logical Conservatism, support of the Constitution, and first and foremost, his love of God, Country and family.
Charlie is survived by his brother, Richard Gesell and wife, Barbara, of Apopka, FL; his first wife, Anita Saitta of Waxhaw, NC and their children, Matthew Gesell, John Gesell, Michael Gesell, Laura Gesell Kelly and husband Michael Kelly and their children, Christopher Knight and Nicole Kelly; pre-deceased by his second wife, Susan Washburn Gesell, and survived by step-son, Brian Sunday and his children, Susan Sunday and Lauren Sunday; pre-deceased by his third wife, Barbra Buckley Gesell and survived by step children, John Natoli and his wife, Laura, Vincent Natoli and his wife, Wendy, and their son, Michael Natoli, and Francine Natoli; and survived by 4 great grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10AM at Ocean View Cemetery on Saturday, July 14, 2018. In lieu of flowers the family suggests you make a donation to your favorite charity in Charlie’s name.
